BIOGRAPHY

Mr. Jean Sylvestre is from a family of notaries. His grandfather, his father and his uncle practiced in Sherbrooke and created the Sylvestre legal office. Jean continued in their wake. After a long and successful career of more than 50 years as a notary, Mr. Sylvestre acts now as an honorary notary in the firm.

During his career, Mr. Sylvestre was the recipient of the Prix Pierre-Duquet and of the Médaille d’honneur du Notariat de la Chambre des notaires du Québec.

His notarial practice was mainly oriented towards personal law: wills, homologation, tutorship, curatorship and liquidation of successions.

COMMUNITY AND PROFESSIONAL INVOLVEMENT

  • Member of the Board, Séminaire de Sherbrooke;
  • Member, l’Association des Anciens du Séminaire de Sherbrooke;

  • Active participation in le Fonds pour le bénéfice des personnes incarcérées de Sherbrooke, la Fondation Bertrand-Fabi and contributor, Dira Estrie;

  • Founder of chorale Sainte-Élisabeth;
  • President, Festival du Lac Massawippi, since1995;
  • Member, faculty council of Faculté de droit de l’Université de Sherbrooke;
  • Involved in la Chambre des notaires du Québec;
  • Involved in Commission des examens;
  • Participation in television advertising for la Chambre des notaires du Québec;
  • Member, Comité de discipline de la Chambre des notaires du Québec.

TEACHING, LECTURES, TRAINING

  • Lecturer, Faculté de droit de l’Université de Sherbrooke for many years;
  • Numerous participations in Justice pour tous, a television show about justice;

  • Invited lecturer at L’école de travail social de l’Université de Sherbrooke;
  • Lecturer on the maltreatance of elderly people.

PUBLICATIONS

  • Co-author with Me Camille Charron of a table of the law on the powers of spouses.

  • Participation in the Commission de rédaction des formulaires, for the new Code civil du Québec, in collaboration with la Chambre des notaires du Québec, 1994.
